Imagine a palette of colors, a whole rainbow, bright, many, loud. But somehow it’s clear: the colors are exactly THE colors, they belong together. They are not just ochre or hyacinth blue, but this particular ochre, this particular hyacinth blue. Is it the smell? Or the consistency? The way it feels to pick up paint with a brush? The Mélusine-Chappuis sound is at least these 100 colors at the same time. Not one on top of the other, not clearly defined, but simply: simultaneously.

Mélusine Chappuis is a Swiss musician, pianist and composer based in Bern. She first learned classical music and then switched to jazz. This musical background has a strong influence on her playing and approach to music. She obtained a bachelor then a master degree in 2020 at the Hochschule der Künste Bern studying with Colin Vallon, Stefan Aeby, Patrice Moret, Manuel Bärtsch and many others.

Currently she is performing in Switzerland and internationally with the collective ARBRE, alongside Paul Butscher and Xavier Almeida. The band won the prestigious ZKB Jazzpreis 2023 and was selected for the Festival Suisse Diagonales Jazz 2024. She receives the Carte Blanche from bee-flat im Progr in Bern for the 2023/24 season, offering her the opportunity to present three different projects, alongside artists such as Elina Duni, Björn Meyer and her new band COCON JAVEL.

All these experiences led her to develop a specific sound which combines acoustic, electronic, improvisation, space and introspection. Whether through her collaborations, performances or artistic creations, she aims to express her political and ethical involvement that challenges established norms, defends the beauty of the inappropriate, and celebrates the existence of doubt and difference.
